ESCANABA, Mich. — Troopers are gathering at Elmer’s County market in Escanaba for the annual Stuff a Blue Goose event.
Stuff a Blue Goose is an event organized by the Michigan State Police in partnership with Toys for Tots, a non-profit organization.
I spoke with two troopers with the Michigan State Police about what makes this so special.
Trooper 1:
Q: Can you explain what the Stuff a Blue Goose event is and why it’s important to the community?
A: “The Stuff a Blue Goose just a yearly donation the state police does throughout the state for the various communities out there. It’s a donation where people can either drop off money, canned food, assorted food for donation that we’ll drop off to the Salvation Army in town here. It’s awesome because you get to see the community come together and see who actually cares about the community and wants to help out.”
Q: What’s your favorite part about being involved in this event?
A: “So my favorite part is being out here interacting with the community. Could be as little as we’re sitting out here and you see a car drive by, and they’ll stop and ask you what’s going on donations this and that, and it’ll kind of change their perspective on what they’re doing today. They’ll either go in, they’ll come out with either some money to donate, food or toys, it’s just cool to interact with people and see how many people actually care about donating and giving back to the community.”
Trooper 2:
Q: What does the support from the Escanaba community mean to you during events like this?
A: “The support of the community is obviously really important, without them none of this would be possible and we’ve had a lot of people show up today, and we’ve taken quite a few goods and it’s going good today.”
Q: What kinds of donations are most helpful right now?
A: “I would say the most helpful donation is food, it’s obviously the most important thing that people will need. Number two would probably be toys given it’s Christmas season, getting toys to people that maybe can’t afford it or are having a tough time right now it’s also very important.”
Events like these help band the community together and help make the holiday season brighter for families in need.
